Personnel includes: Nina Simone (vocals, piano); Jack Sheldon (trumpet); Jeffrey De Rosa, Richard Todd (French horn); Frank Marocco (accordion); Earle Dumler, Gary Foster, Valerie King (reeds); Israel Baker, Gina Kronstadt, Joel Derouin (violin); Marilyn Baker, Evan Wilson, Herschel Wise (viola); Fred Seykora, Suzie Katayama (cello); Carol Robbins, Ann Stockton (harp); Michael Melvoin (piano); John Chiodini, Al Shackman (guitar); John Clayton, Jim Hughart, John Pena, Margot MacLaine (bass); Jeffrey Hamilton, Paul Robinson (drums); Larry Bunker, Darryl Jackson, William Summers (percussion).Recorded at Oceanway Studios, Hollywood, California, and Mad Hatter Studio, Los Angeles, California. Includes liner notes by Ntozake Shange. For four decades, Nina Simone has bewitched listeners with her uncategorizable blend of music. Unwilling to compromise to popular standards, hers has been a lonely course which led her away from the United States. Nina Simone adds to her recording legacy with this fine 1993 collection of contemplative tracks (which was her first release in more than five years).A SINGLE WOMAN is an appropriately titled, almost autobiographical testament to her life, a meditation on the joys and pains of a woman alone. Her rich, deep voice soars dramatically over lush orchestral arrangements. The album’s high point is a superb reprise of her haunting tango arrangement of “Just Say I Love Him” with guitarist Al Shackman (whom she worked with during her early years) making a guest appearance. Also included are three Rod McKuen songs and a moving version of the standard “The Folks Who Live on the Hill” that is dedicated to the late Prime Minister of Barbados.

Vocalist Teena Marie began the ’90s recovering from an accident in Texas that had broken six ribs. This album was an attempt to recapture her earlier success, and included a song written and produced by Soul II Soul’s Jazzie B. Unfortunately, it didn’t generate much action, and Marie was unable to halt the slide that had begun in the mid-’80s. Despite some strong, often delightful and energetic vocals, no single from the album exploded, and Marie would soon find herself dropped from the label. ~ Ron Wynn

By the early ’80s, Hall and Oates had mastered a canny synthesis of their doo-wop and Philly soul roots with New Wave energy and hard rock grit. And this album, one of their very best, is a perfect example of how to craft unabashedly commercial pop music with brains. A certain over-reliance on synthesizers and drum machines dates it slightly, as does the slightly misogynistic tone of some of the lyrics, but overall this is irresistible stuff. Prime cuts include the hit “Maneater,” one of the best Motown pastiches ever; the hooky “Family Man”; “Delayed Reaction,” which splits the difference (successfully) between ’60s garage rock and early stuff by the Police; the should have been a single “Italian Girls”; and the lovely soft soul ballad “One on One.”

Reggae figurehead Bob Marley–a songwriter, poet, activist, and visionary–is one of them. The idea that a single-disc collection could represent the depth, breadth, and power of Marley’s achievement is far-fetched, but LEGEND makes an excellent attempt. Every single one of its tracks is outstanding, and the artist’s different faces–revolutionary (“Get Up Stand Up”), romantic (“Is This Love”), devout Rastafarian (“Buffalo Soldier”), and prophet (“One Love/People Get Ready”) are equally represented. In addition to his moving message of love and unity, Marley is a master songwriter, as the timelessness of songs like “Stir It Up,” “I Shot the Sheriff,” and the gorgeous, poignant “Redemption Song” proves. Of course, a true sampling of Marley’s output would require some early ska material, the Wailer’s debut (CATCH A FIRE), the definitive NATTY DREAD, and his later-period opus EXODUS, but LEGEND provides a highly satisfying, if brief, overview of Marley’s genius. A record well suited to any location, season, or time of d

Chick Corea and Stefano Bollani’s Orvieto (named after the Italian city in which it was recorded) finds the two pianists, an American who is pushing 70 and an Italian in his late 30s, paired at a duo acoustic piano concert from December 2010. The set consists of tunes alternated from each of the player’s repertoires, but only the selections were agreed upon in advance; otherwise, the two are winging it. Naturally, Corea takes the lead on his numbers and Bollani on his, making it easy to tell the difference between them, even if their playing styles were not sufficiently distinct. The opening with the mutually composed-on-the-spot “Orvieto Improvisation No. 1″ suggests a more esoteric effort than the concert as a whole turns out to be, as Corea and Bollani feel each other out with dissonant chords in a modern classical manner, before the piece develops rhythmically and comes together. The track gives way to Antonio Carlos Jobim’s “Retrato em Branco e Preto,” Bollani’s first showcase (fans will recall that he recorded an entire album of Jobim music, Falando de Amor), which demonstrates the Italian’s sometimes florid, always emotional, and highly melodic playing style. Here and elsewhere, Bollani demonstrates a pretty, lyrical, and showy approach, including cascading runs, as Corea supports him with rhythmic chording. The older player demonstrates his technical ability starting with a take on the standard “If I Should Lose You,” taking fast, bright, single-note runs. And so it goes, as Bollani actually proves the more traditional of the two, Corea recalling his bop roots, particularly when the duo’s second improvisation gives way to Miles Davis’ “Nardis,” a tune associated with Bill Evans (a player to whom Corea has devoted an entire album). Although Corea is often figuratively as well as literally on Bollani’s home turf, providing support on Bollani originals and another Jobim selection, the show closes with a strong reading of Corea’s “Armando’s Rhumba” before the enthusiastic crowd brings the pianists back to make up a “Blues in F.” And thus the veteran of Hispanic heritage and the younger Italian mix their Southern European flavors on one of the building blocks of American jazz, making for a heady musical concoction that confirms the talents of both. ~ William Ruhlmann

Director Ulrich Seidl’s despairing, relentlessly downbeat social drama Import/Export unfolds against the backdrop of contemporary Europe. Olga (Ekateryna Rak) is a single mother struggling to raise her child with a very meager income from her nursing job in a Ukrainian hospital. In desperation, she takes a job as a nude webcam model for an adult entertainment outfit that caters to German men, then quickly decides that life in her town is unbearable, and ultimately leaves her child with her mother, heading west to search for a better life. Meanwhile, in Austria, ne’er-do-well loser Pauli (Paul Hofmann) lives with his mother and his greasy-haired stepfather, Michael (Michael Thomas), to whom he’s increasingly indebted. Pauli is training to be a security guard, but gets stripped, then relentlessly beaten and assaulted by a gang of youths. Eventually, Pauli and Michael hit the road together, delivering poker and gumball machines to locations across Eastern Europe, and Michael reveals a truly degenerate side, using his time on the road for a string of sexual encounters with different women. At the same time, Olga makes her way to Austria, enduring a series of occupations including those of au pair, maid, and eventually, charwoman in a geriatric hospital plagued by mistreatment of the elderly. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Sheer Heart Attack [Import]

Sheer Heart Attack [Import]

$89.99

SHEER HEART ATTACK is widely considered Queen’s best pre-”Bohemian Rhapsody” album. Containing their first global hit single, “Killer Queen,” it certainly qualifies as one of Queen’s best all-time releases. Just prior to the recording of the album, Queen was making very important inroads in America by opening a US tour for Mott the Hoople, but had to cut it short when guitarist Brian May became seriously ill. Instead of moping, the band immediately began writing and recording SHEER HEART ATTACK while May recovered. Upon its release, fans were pleasantly surprised to witness Queen’s growth–although there were still plenty of hard rock numbers, other musical styles were tried and perfected, while the energy of their live show shined through in many of their new songs. The album’s other popular single, “Now I’m Here,” would prove to be a concert staple for years to come, while the opening “Brighton Rock” is a superb showcase for the many talents of May. Perhaps most significantly, singer Freddie Mercury really came into his own on SHEER HEART ATTACK, having no problem handling ragtime tunes (“Bring Back That Leroy Brown”), sounds from the Caribbean (“Misfire”), unaccompanied piano ballads (“Dear Friends”), or raging heavy metal (“Stone Cold Crazy,” “Flick Of The Wrist”).

Bad Reputation [Import]

Bad Reputation [Import]

$37.99

Thin Lizzy: Phil Lynott (vocals, bass); Brian Robertson, Scott Gorham (guitar); Brian Downey (drums).Irish rock outfit Thin Lizzy gained worldwide status with its summer anthem, “The Boys Are Back in Town,” a Springsteen pastiche of summer nights, male bonding, and the occasional fist fight or two. Although the band never released another single that equaled its impact, Thin Lizzy was enjoying both a commercial as well as creative peak during the mid- to late ’70s. BAD REPUTATION is arguably the band’s last “great” album. The radio-ready single, “Dancing in the Moonlight” is nearly as winning as the aforementioned “Boys” and the pumping title track is a classic Thin Lizzy mixture of twin guitars, bravado, and a dash of menace. Although singer Phil Lynott had a habit of crossing over into overblown machismo, more often than not the soulful tear in his voice along with the band’s signature twin melodic guitar lines elevated the material beyond mere lunkhead chest pounding.

The Police: Andy Summers (vocals, guitar); Sting (vocals, bass); Stewart Copeland (drums).Recorded at Surrey Sound Studios, London, England. The Police brashly asserted themselves on the American pop scene with OUTLANDOS D’AMOUR, their first album. Their distinctive mix of rock and reggae with Sting’s jazz-based vocals and slightly punk lyrics was unlike that of any other group. Before releasing any songs in America, manager Miles Copeland (Stewart’s brother) arranged an American tour complete with rented van and borrowed equipment. With America thus primed, The Police’s first single “Roxanne” (already a British hit) went as far as #32 on the charts.

Kelly Clarkson’s fifth studio album, Stronger features the original American Idol winner on tracks she says were influenced by a mix of Prince and Tina Turner with a bit of a country vibe thrown in. The album follows up her hit 2009 release All I Ever Wanted. Having begun work on the album in 2009, Clarkson collaborated with a handful of writers and producers, including Claude Kelly and Howard Benson as well as Jason Halbert, Rodney Jerkins, and others. Released in September of 2011, Stronger features the single “Mr. Know It All.”

Amboy Dukes [Import Version]

Amboy Dukes [Import Version]

$12.99

The debut album by the Amboy Dukes should be high on collectors’ lists. Fusing the psychedelia of the early Blues Magoos with Hendrix riffs and British pop, the band which launched the legend of Ted Nugent has surprises galore in these lost grooves. More experimental than Ambrose Slade’s Ballzy — could you conceive of the Cat Scratch Fever guy performing on Peter Townshend’s “It’s Not True” and Joe Williams’ classic “Baby Please Don’t Go”? The latter tune was the flip side of the group Them’s single “Gloria,” but Ted Nugent and the boys totally twist it to their point-of-view, even tossing a complete Jimi Hendrix nick into the mix. The Amboy Dukes issued this as the single backed with their sitar-laden and heady “Psalms of Aftermath.” “Baby Please Don’t Go” is extraordinary, but isn’t the hit single that “Journey to the Center of the Mind” would be from their follow-up LP titled after that radio-friendly gem. Producer Bob Shad’s work with Vic Damone, Dinah Washington, and Sarah Vaughan wasn’t what prepared him for the psychedelic hard rock of “Colors,” a song with some of the experimentation Nugent would take further on the Survival of the Fittest, Live and Marriage on the Rocks/Rock Bottom albums further down the road. Those latter-day Dukes projects took themselves too seriously and got a bit too out there. The fun that is the Amboy Dukes take on the Ashford/Simpson/Armstead standard “Let’s Go Get Stoned”; it’s the kind of thing that could have stripped away the pretension of the post-Mainstream discs. The dancing piano runs and Ted Nugent confined to a pop-blues structure certainly got the benefit of Shad’s record making experience, and it is a treat. Of the 11 tunes, seven are band originals. Taking on a faithful version of Cream’s “I Feel Free” is interesting, and like Slade’s first disc, they inject enough cover material to make the product interesting for those who had never heard of this group. “Down on Philips Escalator” could be early Syd Barrett Pink Floyd, and that’s what makes this album so very inviting. As essential to the Amboy Dukes’ catalog as the non-hit material on Psychedelic Lollipop was to the Blues Magoos, the first album from the Amboy Dukes is a real find and fun listening experience. “The Lovely Lady” almost sounds like the Velvet Underground meets the Small Faces by way of Peanut Butter Conspiracy. This is a far cry from Cat Scratch Fever, and that’s why fans of psychedelia and ’60s music should cherish this early diamond. ~ Joe Viglione

Move Along [Import]

Move Along [Import]

$14.99

Hampered for some time by the implosion of their label Dreamworks, Oklahoma’s All-American Rejects finally followed up their self-titled 2002 debut three years later. Happily, MOVE ALONG sounds like almost no time at all had passed between outings. Kicking off with the brash punk-pop of the first single, “Dirty Little Secret” (which features a killer distorted guitar riff), MOVE ALONG keeps things lively. The songs are short and the choruses are tailor-made for shouting along with, as people undoubtedly will. As before, co-leader Nick Wheeler decorates the songs with more odd touches than one would expect from an otherwise straightforward pop-punk band, layering sitar, banjo, theremin and hip-hop-flavored electronic beats into songs that otherwise sound little different from the likes of Blink-182 or Good Charlotte. Highlights include the sneering “Stab My Back,” and the flamenco-inflected rocker “Top of the World.”

Japanese goth metal outfit Dir en Grey returns with 2006′s Withering to Death, continuing their curious mixture of the apocalyptic themes of Scandinavian death metal, noisy industrial dance-rock ? la Nine Inch Nails or Marilyn Manson, and the gleeful over-the-top theatrical qualities of ’70s glam, particularly singer Kyo’s falsetto shrieks, which put the guy from the Darkness to shame. By this point in their nearly decade-long career, the band has their shtick down and they’re working it for all it’s worth; Withering to Death brings nothing new to the party either, musically or lyrically, although the single “Clever Sleazoid” is a fair encapsulation of the group’s unique sound. Bottom line: for those who like this sort of thing, this is the sort of thing they’ll like, but no one who has so far resisted Dir en Grey’s charms will be swayed. ~ Stewart Mason

Metallica: James Hetfield (vocals, guitar); Kirk Hammett (guitar); Cliff Burton (bass); Lars Ulrich (drums).Recorded at Sweet Silence Studios, Copenhagen, Denmark in Spring 1984.Metallica turned the metal world on its ear with their debut album, KILL ‘EM ALL and then blew its mind with the follow-up, RIDE THE LIGHTNING. The riffs and arrangements are more intricate, the lyrics are more intelligent and biting and James Hetfield’s growl is meaner. The set starts out with two tunes that would have been right at home on KILL ‘EM ALL, but the next two are slower and more involved. “Ride The Lightning” is a slow (by Metallica’s standards) dirge about the futility of war. “Fade To Black” is a ballad (!) that builds to an instrumental coda featuring the guitar melodies that the band would later base their sound around. It’s also Hetfield’s first attempt at singing in tune. The most ambitious song is a dense instrumental, “The Call Of Ktulu,” that starts with a single arpeggiated guitar and slowly adds layer upon layer, building in intensity until it all comes crashing down nine minutes later.

This was the 1987 Grammy winner for best engineered non-classical recording.More meticulously crafted than its predecessor ARC OF A DIVER, and more musically adventurous than its follow-up ROLL WITH IT, BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE represents the pinnacle of Steve Winwood’s ’80s pop output. High production values, interlocking percussion lines, R&B backing vocals, horns, synthesizers and ideas borrowed from various world musics enhance and update Winwood’s proclivity for blues, R&B, and rock. His distinctive, blue-eyed soul vocals are, naturally, at the front of the mix as well. The runaway Number One single, “Higher Love,” with its syncopated groove, pan-African percussion, and slick Top-40 production, kicks off this accessible set. Elsewhere, the dance-gospel of “Wake Me Up on Judgment Day,” the semi-acoustic title track, and the funk-touched “Split Decision” (which proves Winwood’s R&B roots are still strong) keep the stylistic wheel turning. The record’s success, sonically and commercially, should come as no surprise. Since his days in Traffic, Winwood has been a masterful stylistic synthesist, melding a range of aesthetics in ways that invariably connect with listeners. BACK IN THE HIGH LIFE is further proof of his remarkable abilities.

Personnel includes: Sting (vocals, guitar, bass); Fareed Haque (guitar); Ken Helman (piano); Kenny Kirkland (keyboards); Manu Katche, Andy Newmark, Kenwood Dennard (drums); Mino Cenelu (percussion, vocoder); Dolette McDonald, Janice Pendarvis, Vesta Williams, Renee Geyer (background vocals).Producers include: Sting, Neil Dorfsman, Bryan Loren.Recorded at Air Studios, Montserrat. Includes liner notes by Sting.Sting’s double-length follow-up to his solo debut DREAMS OF THE BLUE TURTLE is very much in the same sophisticated, adult pop vein, although darker and less jazzy (notwithstanding a collaboration with Miles Davis’s arranger Gil Evans on a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Little Wing”). The songs are a generally varied lot, ranging from a tribute to victims of repression in Argentina (“They Dance Alone”) to a tongue-in-cheek, sort-of-reggae tribute to famous eccentric Quentin Crisp (“An Englishman in New York”). The sort-of-funk “We’ll Be Together”(originally written for a Japanese beer commercial) is the most upbeat and pop-ish thing here, and was deservedly a hit single, although Sting now disdains it.

The Odd Couple [Import]

It’s hard enough to follow up a successful debut album, but try following up a boundary-breaking blockbuster of a debut album. The duo of Cee-Lo and Danger Mouse became a household name as Gnarls Barkley in 2006 with their frothy blend of pop, R&B, and hip-hop. Two years on, THE ODD COUPLE stands up proudly alongside its predecessor. The basic recipe hasn’t been drastically altered–Danger Mouse’s skittering beats and snap-crackle-pop production still provide the perfect platform for Cee-Lo’s mighty, soulful wail. If anything, the pair have refined and sharpened their approach to a razor’s edge. The key is the way the musical flavors intersect: the Arthur Lee-meets-N.E.R.D. stroll of “Surprise,” the jubilant jumble of gospel/soul/synthpop on “Going On,” the Otis Redding-shares-a-treadmill-with-Outkast feel of the single “Run (I’m a Natural Disaster).” The cumulative effect is one of a group whose trick-bag has a never-ending supply of happy surprises. Take that, pessimistic sophomore-jinx predictors!

James Blunt’s 2005 debut, BACK TO BEDLAM, was a surprise runaway hit, and reminded the public that there was still plenty of room on the pop charts for pretty, heartfelt, singer-songwriter fare. Blunt’s sophomore effort, ALL THE LOST SOULS, doesn’t find him branching out exactly, but rather refining the formula that made BEDLAM such a success. Here Blunt’s sharp songwriting, earnest lyrics, and fragile, expressive vocals come across stronger than ever, striking the perfect balance between wistful melancholia and sweet pop accessibility.Overseen by producer Tom Rothrock (who also worked on BEDLAM), ALL THE LOST SOULS has a sleek, crisp sound that still manages to heighten the intimacy of the tunes. “1973,” the album’s first single, is a case in point. With its breezy, soft-rock sound, the song could have easily been a radio hit from the year it describes, but the familiarity is endearing, and sets the tone for the rest of the disc. In fact, the album–with its introspection, emotiveness, and guitar and piano-driven songwriting–fits neatly into the style pioneered by such ’70s artists as James Taylor, which should please all folk and pop fans, whether they were born before 1973 or after.

They will forevermore be known for the 17-minute title track of this, their second album.”In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida” (a poke at singer/organist Doug Ingle’s gruff, John Kay-like delivery of “In the Garden of Eden”) is built around one of the most memorable riffs of the ’60s. It’s filled out by long solos from all concerned, especially from drummer Ron Bushy, whose lengthy extemporizing provided the template for Big Rock Drum Solos for decades to come. The rest of the tunes reveal that Iron Butterfly did indeed possess some pop sensibility to leaven the heaviness; “Flowers and Beads” in particular is simultaneously a romantic ’60s pop-rock ballad and a subtle but surprising swipe at flower power culture.

The Alesha Show [Import]

The Alesha Show [Import]

$26.99

After her 2006 debut album Fired Up went unreleased, former Mis-Teeq MC/singer Alesha Dixon looked to have joined Matt Willis, Duncan James, and Kym Marsh on the scrapheap of failed noughties pop solo careers. However, a victory on the hugely popular Strictly Come Dancing has given her an unexpected reprieve, leading to a new deal with Warner Music and a media profile bigger than she’d ever achieved in her band’s heyday. The big question now is whether she can capitalize on her good fortune, with her second, and more importantly, available in-stores album, The Alesha Show? First single, the Xenomania-produced “The Boy Does Nothing,” suggests solo pop stardom should be much more successful second time around. With shades of Lou Bega’s 90s number one “Mambo No. 5,” it’s guaranteed to end up on countless party compilations thanks to its samba rhythms, surf guitars, and impossibly infectious chorus. Indeed, the seven songs produced by the team behind Girls Aloud is full of exciting, hook-laden, spiky dance-pop, such as the retro ’60s pastiche “Cinderella Shoe,” reminiscent of Cheryl Cole and co.’s chart-topper “The Promise,” the Sade-esque cocktail bar sounds of “Italians Do It Better,” and the piano-driven, jazz-pop stomper “Play Me.” The other half of the album is a little more inconsistent. The string-laden “Do You Know,” and “Breathe Slow,” one of the few concessions to her R&B past, are perfectly competent ballads but show that Dixon’s light but sometimes reedy vocals are much more suited to uptempo material than Beyonce-style slow jams. Elsewhere, the irritating high-pitched synths and flat chorus of “Let’s Get Excited” nearly sinks the album before it begins, while the synth-led “Hand It Over” is a misguided attempt at reprising Gwen Stefani’s “Hollaback Girl.” However, “Can I Begin” is a gorgeous acoustic midtempo which owes more than a nod to Nelly Furtado’s “All Good Things,” and the atmospheric, Spector-esque “Chasing Ghosts” suggest Dixon might not necessarily need the comfort zone of Brian Higgins’ hit factory for her next album. Much more inventive than expected, The Alesha Show cleverly manages to appeal to both the older Strictly crowd who revitalized her fortunes, and the younger Radio 1 crowd who supported her earlier girl-band days. ~ Jon O’Brien
