Eight Reasons Self-Publishers Fail ..
And the ease with which avoid these traps!
By Peter Bowerman
Common, easy to avoid errors. Self-publishers do all the time, and therefore, make the publishing process more difficult than it should be. No director is not clear from these errors guarantee riches beyond your imagination run wild, but clearly some of the most typical blocks out of their way.
Error # 1: You has written a book useless.
Hard? Maybe. But to be honest. If we talk about literature (fiction is different), if there is already 20 titles on the subject, that the world really need a 21? If so, how is yours different? In other words, write a book of people want to read. If there are no books on the subject, what could be a good thing, or it could be a sign that the market does not exist, is too expensive to reach or not to support the title well enough to profitable.
Error # 2: You have a bad cover of the book.
It is categorically impossible to overstate the importance of good coverage. More than 190,000 books are published each year. Those wholesale, distribution, inventory, and books for review are constantly looking for reasons to slaughter the herd. Coverage the best place to start. I've always been fascinated by self-publishers who invest a large amount of blood, sweat and tears into their books and then settle for a coverage crummy research.
A security policy: Until you know for a fact another way, suppose you, as a writer, I do not know if it was good design and hit one. coverage of hiring a design professional or ideally a full time developer, not your cousin who is artistic and not your printer internal panel (usually based on cutter templates working models, so that your book will not only look like an amateur but a bunch of others).
Do you have a bookstore in the neighborhood? " Check it out – with its designer, if possible – and study the books on the shelves where it is yours. When the cover Report your attention, why appeal to you and think about how to understand what works. If the designer can not go to the library to take notes on the covers that you like and send the links to Amazon or bn.com designer. Yes, get a professional coverage will cost more, but if they are in this game for the long term and make a few dollars, there will be a misery.
Error # 3: The title is lame.
Or low, bland, confusing, boring, or strange. Anything that can obstruct the potential of a book. If you wrote a book, how to make a promise: to show what is for the reader (eg, well-fed writer, the manager of one minute Chicken Soup for the Soul, Fix-It and Forget-it book income). Anime reader. If you are not simply in terms of creation of titles, hire someone who is, as a professional writer.
Error # 4: Not hiring an editor and proofreader.
I do not like the way your book is clean as a paten, a good editor and a good proofreader (sometimes a single person) you will find lots of errors and lost tons offer constructive suggestions that he was never occurred. I promise. You can be a wonderful writer and have things to say, but if the book is full of typos or grammatical errors, nobody reads it enough to know that.
Mistake # 5: You think the small (first part).
Since I started my adventure self-published in 1999, I read or heard countless stories of self-publishing "success" in newsletters and at meetings and conferences. Often, the coup became a library some copies independently to a book or a library to convince securities or landing the title of a notice published in some children. There is nothing wrong with that.
But I say that the validation of the conclusion of the whole wide world, whatever small, think small. Like everything you deserve are the pieces. The loss of this mentality. You have every right to be there. But if your goal is commercial success, while you should think big, you have be smart on this and develop a campaign that effectively reaches your target audience. Speaking of which …
Error # 6: You are the promotion of good old days.
The Standard Book marketing / promotion model of traditional media calls to hit the ground reviews, articles, presentations on radio and television, etc., that may make sense in the context of a marketing campaign for an ordinary book. But if yours is a niche book, and here is the truth: the average pro media do not care about you.
Even if you have a paperback, but you're an unknown author opportunities remain excellent, do not care about you. An unknown author of a window in the hotel? Fuhgedaboudit.
The best way is through guidance Internet. In a word, to identify your audience know where you post online, contact the owners of these sites and hard work to examine the land, presentation, interviews, green lights to write articles, etc and then repeat. Repeatedly. Speaking of which …
Error # 7: You think the small (second part).
You will not make your book a commercial success by sending a few dozen copies for further studies, advertising and promotion. You have to think of large numbers: 350-400 and more. Send to a large number of carefully designed materials to attack intelligently, diligently followed and some going to happen.
Yes and 350-400 sounds daunting (When I have a life? You lament), but keep in mind three things: (1) is sent these books in a period of three or four years (2) you can easily get one third to half that number in the first months, and most importantly, (3) you can do what I did and hire an intern to manage most of the work of marketing.
I just put my internship with the slots e-mail standard cut and paste a list of contact persons, and guidelines for more prospects. All for about $ 9 per hour. It worked well. Visit internjobs.com internweb.com or an ad for free.
In the same vein …
Error # 8: You Forgot is just a job.
Be called self-publishing, but this does not mean that everything is theirs. As a self-publisher you have a job: the application to build your book. Yes, you need to monitor The book production process (recruitment of creative professionals to address mounting design, cover design, indexing and printing), but Once done, most if not all tasks are not specifically related to marketing (for example, strengthening the application) should be delegated another person. This may mean that the Web design, warehousing, fulfillment, accounting, and more. You'll be healthier, have more fun and improve their performance.

Bon Iver $9.26 Bon Iver’s Bon Iver is Justin Vernon returning to former haunts with a new spirit. The reprises are there â solitude, quietude, hope and desperation compressed â but always a rhythm arises, a pulse vivified by gratitude and grace notes. The winter, the legend, has faded to just that, and this is the new momentary present. The icicles have dropped, rising up again as grass. … |

Self-Titled $13.95 Can a breakup break you apart?. In Self-Titled , Geoffrey Brown stares into a mirror and writes what he sees, what he thinks, what he feels. The result? A self-portrait that's at once comic and psychotic, a complex consciousness captured in crystalline prose. Memories, manias, miasmas – Brown morphs the machinery of his mind into an utterly original entity, equal parts diary, criminal confession, sex manual and mash note, as he contemplates a breakup. The novel splits into two parts; in 'First,' our slacker hero analyzes the minutiae of the relationship, trying to understand what he did, why it went wrong, and whether she'll come back. In 'Second' he knows she's not coming back, and he gets angry, flagellating himself with a whip of wordplay and remorse. Self-Titled is a singular achievement with universal appeal: who hasn't squinted into a mirror and said, 'What the hell is happening here?'? If Gertrude Stein's autobiography was Everybody's Autobiography, then Brown's self-portrait is everybody's self-portrait. Guest edited for the press by Derek McCormack. |

NOFX – Self-Titled 10 Vinyl EP $9.99 This album doesn’t really have a title since the moniker “self-titled” is so generic and clumsy, and since the band didn’t have the foresight or inclination to come up with a jazzy little symbol, it has been informally dubbed the hardcore 10″. The 10″ part of the name refers to the format, obviously. And hardcore, well, that refers to the music. |

Bronze sculpture, ‘Self Confidence’ $862.95 By Anamaria Vieira this elegant sculpture illustrates a play on words. She names the piece Desenvoltura, meaning “self confidence.” Yet the figure’s movement also suggests an unwrapping, a freedom from its envoltura. Polished contours take shape in bronze with a dark, antique finish, the lithe body suggesting a dancer. It stands on a granite base. Titled “Desenvoltura” in Portuguese. |
