These same musicians, however, are all top-notch, second-generation players influenced by the rock scene. Consequently, Doug Dillard and crew manage to breathe genuine new life into many standards without sacrificing the integrity of the originals. In fact, the musicians not only play ferociously, but often completely reinterpret the old chestnuts, occasionally making them sound even better. In many cases, Dillard employs droning harmonic tonalities characteristic of Indian music and Indian-influenced psychedelic rock guitar. The record also features atypical bluegrass instruments such as harpsichord, harmonica, drums, dembek, and tablas. Rather than coming off as gimmicky, though, the use of exotic instrumentation serves to add exciting new textures and moods to music which, during this pre-”newgrass” period, rarely deviated from very strict stylistic guidelines. Plus, nearly every performance here is simply an all-out jam, with Dillard playing particularly explosively. The Love Album [UK] $12.99 The songs heard on The Love Album first came to light nearly 30 years after their recording, but they should never have lingered in the vaults so long; what’s more, if an LP had appeared on schedule, it would have easily remained Doris Day’s finest album of the ’60s. But neither her commercial fortunes nor the market for Tin Pan Alley songs (even standards) appeared particularly bright in 1967. Day had just broken with her record label Columbia, and was producing herself for the first time; and most of her contemporaries were either fighting the tide of pop culture or only keeping their head above water by covering new standards such as “Sunny” or “The Windmills of Your Mind.” Day chose instead to sing a collection of songs whose cumulative age was something like 350 years old (although the chestnut “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” had been revived by Elvis Presley only a few years earlier). Day sings simply, sweetly, and straight as an arrow, as always, but she infuses these songs with a multitude of emotion that most singers need a half-dozen notes to get across. Recording with a core quintet plus background strings, Day and her co-producers (one of which was her husband Marty) seemed to realize what Columbia did only fitfully — that Doris Day was a singer whose power lay with the sparseness of the arrangements behind her. The book’s introduction detail how the cards were produced, analyzes the subject matter depicted on the cards, documents the history of several of the most prominent local photographers in the state whose work is found almost only on postcards, and traces the evolution and popularization of postcard photography. Through the photographs readers can witness the development of Delaware agriculture and fisheries, the expansion of the railroad into southern Delaware, the declining days of steamship service on Delaware rivers and creeks, the fate of Middletown’s last trolley, Delaware’s unsuccessful campaign against “King Alcohol.” They can see how Delawareans worshipped, worked, and shopped. They can visit local amusement parks and beaches from New Castle county to Sussex county. At the turn of the twentieth century the world was figuratively smaller, more isolated, and provincial for all Americans. Obviously there was no television or radio, no magazines filled with photographs. Telephones were just beginning to appear in homes and even then you could only call someone who was served by the same company. Daily travel was by horse and buggy over unpaved roads. For ordinary Americans, a vacation might mean a trip to a local amusement park or a nearby beach or a day trip on a river in a steamer. Travel, “seeing the sights,”was a new and novel concept. Newspapers did not contain photographs, amateur photography and the developing and printing of film required considerable chemical skills. It was in part this isolation and the hunger for visual images that fed the rise of the picture postcard-not just in the United States, but throughout the world.
