Touch of Evil [Original Soundtrack] $8.99 Original score composed by Henry Mancini.Includes liner notes by Kevin Mulhall.Composer: Henry Mancini.Henry Mancini’s first major film score, TOUCH OF EVIL introduced generations of hipsters to the master’s musical style, dispelling their mistaken notions that he was a mere dispenser of schmaltz. The movie is a classic, twisted film noir directed by Orson Welles and shot with what was particularly remarkable realism for the time. This is one of those rare early soundtracks where the entire score is “source music,” that is, it’s playing on radios or in club scenes instead of being overlaid in the traditional Hollywood way. TOUCH OF EVIL uses Mancini’s deliberately seedy, slightly malevolent music to perfect effect. In particular, Mancini’s use of traditional mariachi instrumentation (the film is set on the California/Mexico border) sounds like it inspired 1990s soundtrack mavens Calexico. TOUCH OF EVIL definitely influenced early British industrial experimentalists Cabaret Voltaire; their 1981 album RED MECCA uses themes from TOUCH OF EVIL throughout, helping bring a new generation of fans to the original work. |

It’s no surprise, then, that both artists show up on the movie’s soundtrack. Simpson performs a bluegrass-meets-hip-hop rendition of the giddily assertive Nancy Sinatra classic “These Boots Are Made for Walkin’,” while Nelson rambles through a country-rock version of the DUKES OF HAZZARD theme song, “Good Ol’ Boys.” (Most listeners who were children of the ’80s will know this one by heart.) The bulk of the remaining album is filled with Southern rock tunes, including the Allman Brothers Band’s high-octane “One Way Out,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s rollicking “Call Me the Breeze,” and Molly Hatchet’s fiery “Flirtin’ with Disaster.” With its entertaining Dixie vibe, THE DUKES OF HAZZARD soundtrack captures the fun, rambunctious spirit of the film. |

I’m Not There [Original Soundtrack] [LP] $65.98 Tributee: Bob Dylan.Just as Todd Haynes’s Bob Dylan biopic I’M NOT THERE takes an unusual approach by having several different people portraying the artist, so the accompanying soundtrack skirts expectations by sporting a wide variety of artists tackling the Dylan catalog, and including a wealth of lesser-known Dylan tunes. Over the course of two discs, Haynes assembles an impressive cast of contributors, from arena-size names (Eddie Vedder, Willie Nelson) to indie-rock cult heroes (Mark Lanegan, Sufjan Stevens) and Dylan contemporaries (Richie Havens, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott).Some of the tracks stick relatively close to the feel of the originals, like Wilco leader Jeff Tweedy’s earthy, folk-rock take on “Simple Twist of Fate,” while others leap headlong into reinvention, like Calexico and Iron & Wine’s atmospheric, wah-wah-soaked collaboration on “Dark Eyes.” In the end, one of the most significant accomplishments of this soundtrack may be the exposure of such relative esoterica as “Man in the Long Black Coat” and “Senor (Tales of Yankee Power)” to an audience outside the closed circle of devout Dylanologists. Oh, and the title track is a previously unreleased tune performed by the man himself. Take that, completists! |

Once again, Will Smith saves the planet from alien invaders, this time partnering up with the stoic-faced Jones. The former Fresh Prince makes use of his rap background on the film’s soundtrack, contributing two cuts, including the title track.Everyone from A Tribe Called Quest and De La Soul to Branford Marsalis’ pop-funk project Buckshot Le Fonque appears here, but predictably, the star of the show is Snoop Doggy Dogg. His “We Just Wanna Party With You” incorporates the guest vocals of JD, a sample from Kool & The Gang’s “Get Down On It” and Snoop’s own inimitable rapping abilites to fine effect. Other avenues are explored by R&B-oriented acts like Trey Lorenz and Alicia Keys, and soundtrack music king Danny Elfman, who contributes the main and closing themes. |

Oliver! [Original Soundtrack] $17.99 Ron Moody recreates his magnificent stage performance as Fagin on this soundtrack album of what must be the best British musical film ever. Shani Wallis replaced Georgia Brown as Nancy, and, together with Mark Lester (Oliver), Jack Wild (Artful Dodger) and Oliver Reed (the sinister Bill Sikes), gives Lionel Bart’s marvellous score the full treatment. Highlights are impossible to select; Oliver’s tender “Where Is Love?” and Fagin’s “You’ve Got To Pick A Pocket Or Two” linger in the memory, but the complete set is as fresh now as when it was released over 25 years ago. In those pre-Lloyd Webber days, musicals had lots of strong songs, not just one. |

Stealth [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Stealth’s claim to fame is three brand new songs from Incubus. The Californians have continually matured over the years (one listen to 2004′s ambitious Crow Left of the Murder proves that), and the Stealth material continues that trajectory. “Make a Move” rails like an athletic, vibrant version of vintage Soundgarden, “Admiration” doesn’t overdo it on the strings and melodrama, and “Neither of Us Can See” is an audaciously arranged, mildly psychedelic foot-tapper that features duet vocals between Brandon Boyd and Chrissie Hynde. It’s a little weird that Sony chose to debut these songs on the soundtrack for an iffy late-summer actioner about a robot bomber gone rogue. But they’re strong entries regardless, and help Stealth’s quality climb higher than, say, the set for Fantastic Four. There’s filler here, of course. Trading Yesterday is a too-clean amalgam of CCM and the Calling, and Acceptance offers the twinkling emo plead of “Different.” But Stealth also opts for a number of collaborative tracks. They don’t all work, but they’re still more interesting than the average summer movie soundtrack fare. For example, Chili Peppers Chad Smith and John Frusciante (his guitar tone is unmistakable) join Glenn Hughes (Deep Purple, occasional Black Sabbath vocalist) for a reverent take on “Nights in White Satin.” Hughes absolutely wails at the end. David Bowie’s meet-up with BT isn’t as successful. “[She Can] Do That” has a punchy electronic bounce, but it could be Bowie or anybody on the chopped-up vocal. Likewise, will.i.am selfishly recuts the Sly & the Family Stone classic “Dance to the Music” as a platform for his “I’m the best dancer ever” proclamations. Elsewhere there’s “Bullet-Proof Skin” from Institute, the new project of grunge survivor Gavin Rossdale. Here’s he’s paired with Photek, but the producer’s trademark electronic manipulation isn’t apparent in the forgettable song, which sounds remarkably like the year 1994 refashioned for a new century. ~ Johnny Loftus |

American Gigolo [Original Soundtrack] $12.99 Recorded at Westlake Audio, Los Angeles, California.All tracks have been digitally remastered.While this soundtrack is arguably most notable for introducing Middle America to Blondie, there is also some interesting incidental music written by legendary producer Giorgio Moroder and performed by Harold Faltermeyer and Keith Forsey — the latter of which may be familiar to some as percussionist for the German prog/art rock collective Amon D??l. There is likewise a vocal contribution from actress/vocalist Cheryl Barnes on “Love and Passion.” The album’s pervading heavily manufactured and synthetically generated atmosphere is convincing in its aural depiction of the shallow decadence portrayed on the screen. It took almost two decades before American Gigolo was issued on CD in North America. The primary impetus for the release was the “extended version” of Blondie’s “Call Me,” which was unavailable on any Blondie album and was too long — at over eight minutes — to fit onto a single. The song was co-composed by Debbie Harry and Moroder specifically for this project, becoming the second chart-topper for the band, ultimately staying at number one for six weeks in March of 1980. The film’s writer/director Paul Schrader — whose lengthy list of cinematic endeavors include Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, The Last Temptation of Christ, and The Mosquito Coast — is credited on the soundtrack as Moroder’s collaborator on the up-tempo “Love and Passion.” Vocalist Cheryl Barnes — who may be best-remembered for her role in Milos Forman’s Hair as “Hud’s girlfriend” — contributes vocals to the mostly forgettable track. The other six instrumentals blend a noir ambience with the utility of background music. The most notable is “Hello Mr. W.A.M” — whose initials stand for Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart — which contains some interesting observations on his Concerto for Clarinet in A Major. Each work contains strong themes that take on lives of their own. This is not surprising given the heady talent behind the compositions and performances. Consumers of movie music will find as much — if not more — to enjoy here than those who are simply looking for “Call Me.” ~ Lindsay Planer |

Elsewhere, Eric Stewart, Graham Gouldman, Lol CrFme, and Kevin Godley get their first opportunity to stretch out compositionally on the surprising extended suite “Une Nuit a Paris” and the lyrically acute “The Second Sitting for the Last Supper.” While not all of 10cc’s new fans got all of the jokes, art pop aficionados swear by this album. |

The Aviator [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 For his film about the early career of Howard Hughes, legendary director Martin Scorcese (famed for his excellent use of music in movies) wisely chose to use period material. Thus, the soundtrack of THE AVIATOR is occupied both by recordings from the late 1920s-early ’40s, and by contemporary versions of songs from that era, done in the style of the day. In lesser hands, such an undertaking could have been a crass, mismatched train wreck, but THE AVIATOR album segues with almost shocking ease between the two.Vince Giordano & his Nighthawks Orchestra, a NYC-based early-jazz revival band, contribute a number of pre-swing jazz instrumentals, and as things progress chronologically, the swing sounds of Benny Goodman (“Moonglow”) and Glenn Miller (“Moonlight Serenade”) creep in. Along the way, the Wainwright family represents surprisingly well, with a track each from Loudon, Rufus, and Martha, and even David Johansen gets in on the act (not a shock, considering his penchant for covering pre-rock material). Things close appropriately with blues giant Leadbelly singing “Howard Hughes,” a musical tribute to THE AVIATOR himself. |

Freaks And Geeks: Original Soundtrack And Score $11.98 Freaks And Geeks is one of the most lavishly praised TV shows of all time. One essential ingredient to its success was the ingenious use of music. Josie and the Pussycats [Original Soundtrack] $6.99 Original score cmposed by John Frizzell.Even though Rachael Leigh Cook, Tara Reid, and Rosario Dawson bring the cartoon musical group Josie And The Pussycats to life on the silver screen, their collective non-musical talents forced executive music producer Babyface and wife Tracy Edmonds to create a post-millennial version of the Monkees. Former Letters To Cleo frontwoman Kay Hanley provides the voice of Josie, while original songs like “3 Small Words,” “Shapeshifter,” and “Pretend to Be Nice” turn out to be the kind of sugar-coated guitar-driven alt-pop that conjures up images of ’90s stalwarts Belly and Veruca Salt.The songwriting and recording contributions from members of Fountains Of Wayne, Counting Crows, the Go-Go’s, and Matthew Sweet also cinch the power-pop karma coursing through this hook-laden project. Chugging covers of “Real Wild Child,” the Motown standard “Money,” and the band’s theme song are the Jolt cola accompanying the Pop Rocks sensibility of these whip-smart songs. The only non-Josie cuts are by DuJour, another fictional band in the film, who come across as a modern-day Blackstreet for the teen crowd thanks to jams like “Dujour Around the World” and “Backdoor Lover.” |

Forbidden Planet [Original Soundtrack] [LP] $19.98 The late Louis Barron and his then-wife Bebe created a unique score for the 1956 MGM film Forbidden Planet. Made up entirely of electronic tonalities generated by cybernetic circuits feeding back (many in their “death throes”), the music for the movie was as unearthly as anything ever heard in a Hollywood soundtrack up to that time (and for many years after as well), and captured perfectly the film’s futuristic extraterrestrial setting and action. Despite their “unnatural” textures, the oscillations, pulses, beeps, wails, and electronic shrieks that make up this soundtrack are, indeed, very musical: they have distinctive patterns that evolve, shift, and change as the circuits creating them go through their “life cycles”; they interweave with each other; and they also occasionally match the action in the scenes to which they are attached. The latter element may tempt one to accuse the Barrons of having “Mickey Moused” the soundtrack, to use a derisive term indicating music that slavishly mimicks action, but in this case they can be forgiven, allowing for the unearthly setting of the movie and the need to envelop the viewer. Additionally, the Barrons were not members of the proper union to allow them to officially “score” a major studio film, and were credited with “tonalities” rather than music, which gave them considerably more freedom. Officially, they were creating a special film environment, not a film score, and succeeded so well that their work stands favorably on its own as a soundtrack. The GNP Crescendo CD release allows one to avoid the problems of noisy vinyl pressings that afflicted the original Planet Records (later changed to Small Planet Records) LP issue from the late ’70s. ~ Bruce Eder |

Terminator: Salvation [Original Soundtrack] $14.99 Composer: Danny Elfman.Producers: Diarmuid Quinn; Marco Cimino; Danny Elfman; Carter Armstrong.Danny Elfman, the prolific former leader of the cult new wave band Oingo Boingo, started earning Hollywood acclaim for his work scoring movies by director Tim Burton. Elfman has also composed the exciting music for 2009′s Terminator Salvation, the fourth film in the blockbuster science fiction franchise. Brad Fiedel originally composed the hauntingly memorable synthesizer-based music for 1984′s The Terminator and 1991′s Terminator 2: Judgment Day. Marco Beltrami took the reins for 2003′s Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines, which featured a more conventional orchestral score and a new take on Fiedel’s original theme. Elfman’s Terminator Salvation work is also orchestral and contains subtle nods to Fiedel’s theme while maintaining a consistent vision. The strings, brass, and percussion superbly reflect the moods of the scenes: relentless action, dramatic tension, and emotional vulnerability. It’s the deft little touches Elfman briefly adds here and there that give this music depth, most notably ethereal classical guitar lines, soft piano chords, and sputtering percussion. |

More synthesizer-heavy than previous releases, FLASH GORDON is comprised mostly of short instrumentals, with a pair of more traditional Queen songs bookending the album. With dialogue from the movie inserted throughout, it is easy for the listener to grasp the storyline, and to tell which scenes the songs represent.”Flash’s Theme” was the soundtrack’s anthemic single, which begins the album on a high note. Then the onslaught of instrumentals begins. The majority can be appreciated outside the story’s context–such as “Football Fight” and “Vultan’s Theme (Attack Of The Hawk Men).” Others are closely linked to the storyline–”In The Space Capsule,” “In The Death Cell,” “The Kiss” and “Marriage Of Dale And Ming”–but are still enjoyable. Although it doesn’t quite match the majesty of an official Queen album, FLASH GORDON contains plenty of first-rate compositions, including one of their most underrated tunes, “The Hero,” which closes the soundtrack. |
